Firefly
Friday nights are great, there's dancing, there's mild flirting with the cute blonde guy, and that slight chemistry with the slightly older man...and then I come home and there's Firefly.
Life is pretty decent. I danced tonight some with J, who is just---how to describe him? Funny, handsome, masculine. And mostly it's just friendly dancing and friendly flirting, barely even flirting. And there are those times where I swear he gives off pheremones or something, he moves a bit and we end up dancing closer, and somehow density of the air changes and just for a moment I think "god if he'd kiss me" and then everything snaps back into place and I realize a kiss isn't going to happen. Which isn't exactly as frustrating as it would seem, because I don't really want anything TO happen, it's just nice to feel that way.
And then I come home and I watch Jayne moon over Simon and it's so sweet.
And here's what I thought about I'm liking River more and more. I really liked her in Shindig when she was reading Badger. I think Summer Glau has a wonderful physical presence (yeah I know she was a dancer) and it showed well when River was talking to Simon about how she knows there's something wrong with her and she understands. The way her head would move or her eyes.
The girl they had playing youngRiver was great too, River was rather bloodthirsty as a child I can see. I got a stronger sense of who River is this episode, obviously she has some inate ablilities but the Alliance did something to her, and her parents put her in that situation and wouldn't save her. Simon did. Simon is willing to die for her or with her or do what he needs to protect her. And failing that, do what he can to make her feel safe. I'm sure that's why he was going to burn with her, so she wouldn't be alone.
Simon really is brave.
Jayne, I've decided, is just living for violence, alcohol, and trying to keep Simon from knowing that he has a crush on Simon. See in my little world view of Firefly Jayne has his crush on Simon and Simon knows. Of course he knows, Simon isn't stupid, but he's torn between being amused and being appalled (it's Jayne!). Also he's so busy worrying about River he just doesn't have time.
And he keeps putting his foot in his mouth with Kaylee becuase he was sure Kaylee had a thing for Inara.
So that's the slashy side of things.
Mal. Mal is such a good captain, and a good person. He's not a smuggler/thief with a heart of gold, if the Alliance had lost Mal would probably still be a transport ship's captain, but he'd be legit. But the Alliance won so he does what he needs to get by and if it hurts the Alliance well then that's good. But he's not going to take medicine from sick people. And if if a ship sent out a distress call he wouldn't go to them, pretend to want to help, shoot the captain, and steal the ship.
Jayne might do that, but not Mal. And that's why Jayne is far awy from the chain of command. Zoe could easily kill Jayne if she had to.
Mal has a strong moral code and a strong sense of honor. He is practical, and if kicking a bad guy in an exhaust vent is what needs to be done, then he'll do it. And if he has to leave the Dr and River to wander around the country side while he goes and gets help for Book then he'll do that too. Even if getting help means going to the Alliance.
Also, in this episode, once again the idea of Serenity being home for the crew, and the crew being a family was emphasized. The teacherwoman asked Simon where his home was. Mal, came and got him and River. And when he asked why he was told "You are part of my crew". That's enough. Book said it was good to be back home. The closing scene was another of the crew eating together. It was nicely done, quietly done. For a few minutes I waited for Simon to say something like "this is home" or for there to be some overt loud reference and there wasn't. I've been watching too much Smallville.
Which leads me to this. Well if you read the spoilers it leads you to this, if you haven't, well I'm here now.
I'm saying good bye to Smallville. I haven't been as intrigued this season as I was last season. When I've watched on tape delay I've fastforwarded a lot. When I've watched it live, I've groaned too many times at the anvils and the plot holes. I knew coming in that Smallville wasn't like Buffy or Angel, it wasn't a show like CSI. It's not like Boomtown.
But I watched Lineage and all I could do was shake my head. When Lex was in danger, I didn't think "oh no!" or even "poor Lex" all I could think was "god, Lex is in trouble again, oh he got hit on the head. again." I read what LaT and Tharimis and others thought of Linage, what they've thought of the season and I can't see what they see anymore. I want to like it and I want to care. But I don't. So, I'm giving it up.
And since I'm dropping SV from my Tuesday night taping schedule I'll be better able to watch Buffy. And I think I'll start taping Boomtown on Sundays.
