Fannish Things
So there's the Apology meme going around...it's kind of interesting, I have no idea why it started. But I kind of want to play, I think it was for slashed characters only but I haven't written that much
First, Dawn...I could apologize for making you kill yourself in a fit of grief and depression...but I tried the story with a happy ending and it didn't work.
Wes, I could apologize for having you stalk around the Hyperion trying to kill Fred---but AtS did that for me, I just got inside your head to see what you were thinking.
Also I could apologize for the little snippet where you woke up and had to relive what you'd done...but you carry that guilt with you canonically.
Xander and Spike...I'm not apologizing for giving you a missing scene from Him, Xander should apologize to me...I tried to get you laid but you balked, "He's a vampire."
To Lex--I really need to apologize for making you too emotional...I don't apologize for making you slightly cracked. However I think I made up for it by giving you three great fantasies about kissing Clark for the first time, and one amazing reality
To Clark--HA! I'm sooo not apologizing for thedisassocitve personality which led to insane dictator like Superman it was way too much fun to write. One day I'll write the truth rather than Superman's version.
To Whitney--I'm sorry that I never got you laid.
Is that it? All I wrote? Well damn. Oh and Xander and Spike, I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to the story where you do actually have sex...
IF I were an Evil Overlord of Fanfiction these would be my edicts:
No Mpreg. NONE
No stories that being posted without being spell checked and proofread. "It's just a hobby" is not an excuse.
No Songfic!!!
Also with that no references to characters listening to music they would not canonically listen to. Giles isn't going to be listening to the Backstreet Boys or Celine Dion and be thinking about Ethan. No, it's wrong!
No--tears of blood, childe/childer nonsense and none of this "he didn't realize he was holding an unneeded breath" or however the writers word it so Spike can gasp or sigh or whatever.
Anyone fucking with characterization and making the characters do things so completely out of character the only reaction most readers have is "the hell?" If they are acting out of character there better be a damned good reason. I would, of course be the final judge of that.
No female characters being turned into bitchy shrews trying to keep the whatever pairing apart. On the flip side of that no women who are just there to help the guys get together.
Any writer turning an established character into near perfection at the expense of the other characters will have to go to remedial characterization school. Same thing for your classic Mary Sues. (If I was really the high Queen Overlord I'd punish Kevin Sorbo for what he did to Andromeda)
Any writer that misspells the name of a main character (it's LINDSEY!) will have to research and write a bio of the character until they can correctly spell the name. Zander is on General Hospital and has no relation to Xander.
Actually I think that's about it.
And finally---I'm still mulling about my first marathon viewing of Due South. I know I need to watch the episodes slowly, but I definitely have a much stronger sense of canon and characterization. It's made going back to read fanfic interesting.
So far I haven't gone back to a story I loved and decided it doesn't work for me. There were a few I was sitting on the fence about and now I'm not sure how I feel.
And then there are the stories that made me go "huh?" the first time I read them, and now it's closer to "the HELL?!?" I really really am wondering what show some people were watching.
