You know my love-in for the library? It's just declined.
It turns out I actually had two library cards. Back in 1994 I was issued a replacement card (they don't know when I was issued a card before that) and in 1998 for whatever reason I was issued a second card.
On the 1994 card I had 3 books I never returned and owed roughly $75. When I got the second card in 1998 my last name was entered in wrong (not surprisng for 5 letters people can't spell it most times).
They told me that the only reason they figured out today, in 2003 that I had two accounts is that I used my DL for identification because I left my card at home.
Now--first for almost 2 yrs (2001-2002 ish) I didn't go to the library and I owed a hefty fine of roughly $75 racked up mostly by having 5 vidoes out for nearly 3 weeks. At $1 a video per day that's a lot of money right there. That fine was forgiven because I'd turned everything in.
However, between 1998 and 2001 I used my driver's lisence for ID--I know I did because I was forever leaving my card at home and they never caught my second account. They never once caught my misspelled name in the intervening years.
But I still owe the money from the books from 1994 which they won't forgive because 1-I've already had a hefty amount forgiven and 2-those books were never returned.
They asked me if I still had them.
I would like to say that I keep every book that goes through my hands but frankly since 1994 I've probably moved 6 or 7 times and I don't keep a lot of books. I love books but I end up trading in paperbacks for others.
So I worked out a payment plan. Every time I check out from the library I pay them $5. Which sucks becuase I was checking out stuff 2-3 times a week (dvds, cds, books, etc) and returning stuff several times a week. I'm going to have to limit myself. Oh! I don't owe them $75 either. I owe them $85 or $90 because I actually have to pay for the books so I the cover price for each book plus a processing fee for each book.
And yes, I know it's my fault for not returning the books but damnit! that was back in 1994 and it's not my fault when I went to go get a library card some moron put in my last name wrong and didn't double check with my socail security number or anything like that. I would have paid it then.
