One last thing about Spike's comments to Wood--- I've said worse things way worse than that in order to hurt, demoralize people. Not that I'm particularly proud of that, but I'm just saying, you can still have a conscience and say really horrid things in order to make someone feel bad, especially in a fight.

Absolutely.

And hey - - Buffy needs to remember that having a soul doesn't mean that you can'd do evil.

(Willow, Warren, Jonathan, Andrews. . .)

Exactly, she's surrounded by it and she either doesn't see it or choses it ignore it.

Or maybe she thinks that because Angel had a soul and felt guilty and stopped killing that Spike will be the same. Except Angel was cursed/punished with a soul and Spike chose his freely, which makes a difference.

I wish someone would say that to Buffy's face "Do you really think that having a soul means he's auotmatically good? That he won't chose to do something evil." And if she does say yes I want someone to say "Warren, Andrew, Professor Walsh,Ethan Rayne. " Hey! What's the name of her friend, the one from LA who wanted to be a vampire and chose to sell her out to Spike? He had a soul.

There's a whole long line of them, and I wish Buffy would either be explicit and say "I know that he could chose to kill but he hasn't because he has a soul." or stop with the "he has a soul" mantra.
