My birthday celebration continues!!! Dad's other present got here -- a Phillips DVP642 dvd player! It plays EVERYTHING! Seriously! I just made a copy of two Wire episodes I had and yay! they play! a bit pixelated by tons better than trying to watch crap on my monitor.

VIDS! I can play VIDS! and finally a couple of those vid cds that I have to coax to work will work.

The 642 is the Lord High God King BAMF of DVD players. Never leave home without it. I have only been able to get it to fail on deliberately pathological content (like DivX over 4500kbit, i.e. four times DVD quality), or really obscure codec combinations and variants.

I approve greatly, if not more so.

The region-free hack is at http://www.videohelp.com/ by the way. Not that I'm encouraging you to void your warranty or anything...

Eventually I'll hack it, but right now I don't need to so I'll just wait. It worked really smoothly, I just burned the cd, popped it in the player and it immediately played. This is a big step up from my old dvd player, which was about 6 yrs old and ready to be replaced.

It's not really a "hack" as such, just a (completely reversible) five or six button code you type on the remote. Still, if you don't need it, you don't need it.
