I liked Fred when we first met her---even though she seemed crazy she was fiesty and had a spine. She clearly had killed people in Pylea and done things in order to survive. Then she came back to LA and she was just crazy. Occasionally she had her ruthless moments...That Old Gang of Mine, and when she made the foot powered decapitating device.
The romantic triangle of Fred/Wes/Gunn was interesting, but that was more Wesley's story because Fred and Gunn never realized that Wes was interested in Fred.
And then came the pancake kisses of happy coupledom.
This season, however, Fred's back to being interesting Fred tazered Connor, more than once, some just to torture him. I know she felt betrayed, Connor had lied to them after Fred and Gunn tried to take care of him, after Fred tried to help him get over his time in the Hell Deminsion...there was a lot of projection going on there.
And this week we have Fred discovering why she got sucked into Pylea. She was going to kill the Professor and she wasn't going to be stopped. A lot of it was revenge...okay most of it was revenge, but it was also proper punishment for the crime. It's not like she can go to the police and have him arrested and she can't just let him keep on doing what he was doing.
In Fred's eyes the Professor was a serial killer. She assumed the rest of the women he had sucked into alternate deminsions were dead, and I can believe that...Fred had the right kind of pratical ruthlessness to survive there. I was a bit surprised when she went to Wesley, but I understand it, Gunn and Angel weren't going to give her the backing and help she needed.
Up until this episode I thought that Fred wasn't exactly aware of Wes's feelings for her, but during the coversation in his car I felt like they were talking about both Wes going along to help Fred and Wesley's attraction to Fred. I can't remember the quote right now (bad brain).
The Gunn went and took away Fred's decision. I don't think Gunn really understands who Fred is and how she had to survive in Pylea. He sees sweet slightly crazy Fred Burkle, tramuatised from her time in Pylea. I don't know if they've talked about how she had to survive but I assume they have a little bit. And while Gunn seems to like that Fred would build a foot operated decapitator thing, I don't think he fully understands WHY Fred would think that's necessary.
My impression was always that Fred didn't just fight in a defensive mode (waiting for the Pyleans to come after her) but that she had to go on the offensive and kill even when she wasn't directly threatened. I don't think Gunn has really grasped this.
Yes, he can say "Fred had to do a lot to survive" but I don't think he really comprehends that "a lot to survive" would include sending someone to a hell demension.
Fred seemed to understand that what she was going to do the Prof. would effect her forever, but she's already been changed by her time in Pylea. That time made her able to extract revenge/punish the Professor.
Gunn killing the Professor was shocking, I couldn't believe it...Gunn killed a person! He was trying to be noble and take away the "pain" of that choice from Fred, but it's going to backfire. Gunn wasnts to protect her and keep her safe, I really don't think Gunn understands that Fred doesn't need his protection.
