My Stargate love continues.

I watched more Firefly the other day and just sat there totally in love with the way Mal speaks.

I can't explain it. And also the way River moves. And I love Jayne! Jayne is fun. Mean and onery but fun.

[livejournal.com profile] elenabtvs is sending me Buffy season 3 & 4 on tape which YAY! I don't have the dvds and don't know when I can get them but this way I can finally watch the episodes the way Joss intended. I've been watching the Faith vids I have and I really like Faith.

I was wondering, because I didn't watch these during the original airing...what were people's reactions to Faith? When I've been watching the episodes on FX I'm really sympathetic to Faith.

Not in the Buffy is a bitch way, but...I'm not sure how I can articulate it when I've only seen the episodes in a kind of random order.

Well, I can't speak for anybody else, because I wasn't online with Buffy fandom at the time, but I was massively sympathetic to Faith. But I could be biased, because I also had a straight-girl crush on her. Which never really went away, actually. Didn't actually start liking hte character until the part where you realize maybe she *doesn't* have it all together, about halfway through her first ep, Faith Hope & Trick. The first half hour I was like, "She's Buffy. Only more so. Meh. Pretty actress, though. THey killed Kendra for this?"

But from me, hopelessly biased, I was very sympathetic, and was in absolute shock when she went to see the Mayor at the end of Consequences. I'd foreseen her arc being a messy one, but I'd thought the events of Bad Girls would've been the culmination of that arc. Instead they kicked off a new, eviller arc.

The entire second half of Buffy S3 I just about got stomach pangs from the two sides pulling me apart. On the one hand, I was still very loyal to Buffy and the Scoobies, so I wanted them to win. Plus, Faith was on the side of EVIL, so I shouldn't want her to win. But she was just a walking open wound, it hurt to look at her, so I wanted everything to turn out OK for her, even if that meant her helping the Mayor eat all of Sunnydale.

It was a weird season for the conflicted feelings.
At the time I was watching, I didn't really understand just why I felt such burning loyalty to Faith. It was only when I rewatched the first half of the season that I realized how isolated and marginalized she'd been from the Scoobies in her pre-evil days, from Giles (who was SUPPOSED to be her Watcher, but was too busy worrying about Buffy to give Faith one tenth of the emotional support he gave Buffy, and who let a minor stay at a hot-sheets motel for months on end when she should've been living in a HOME. Slayers usually live with their Watchers. If Giles wasn't comfortable with that, he should've arranged for her to have a nice apt with a housekeeper to make sure she got home-cooked meals etc, and visited her there frequently. It's not like the Council couldn't have afforded it. Or if he couldn't spare the time/emotional energy from Buffy, his surrogate daughter, he should've told the Council to send another Watcher pronto, so Faith wouldnt' fall between the cracks. The irony of course is that the Mayor was far more of a Watcher to Faith than Giles or Wesley ever bothered to be).

This is what I've been seeing as well. I know when Faith first showed up everyone was all Faith! Faith! and Buffy acted jealous and then it turned out her Watcher was viciously killed and Faith was out for revenge and you'd think that everyone would be all supportive of what was going on with Faith but it seemed that didn't happen.

Plus visually there was a huge difference between Buffy and Faith. I was discussing this with the Buffistas--how Buffy looked, almost prim, in her little outfits and matching handbags--compared to Faith. They said that was just after SMG put her foot down and said no more miniskirts and the costumers hadn't figured out to put her in pants (like hot chicks don't wear pants) but still Buffy looked almost--matronly and innocent next to Faith.

There's the one scene I'm not sure which episode, but Buffy is leaving Faith's hotel room and she's walking down the stairs and she looks like a brand new teacher who's just gone to the projects to check on her wayward student. I mean, Buffy looked oldish and prim and disapproving and Faith looked so young and lost.

Anyway, there's Faith...no family, no support, living hand to mouth, with her Watcher murdered in front of her, no one acts like this is any kind of big deal. And then it's all "Faith is evil!" Yes, she killed the guy, but frankly I think Buffy might have made the same mistake, and yes Faith lied and said it was Buffy, but really, Buffy didn't do much to inspire Faith's loyalty.

When I watched the coma dream sequence right before Faith wakes up it just hurt me because Faith is so happy. Then I got so mad because no one stopped to think "You know, Faith's been in a coma for all this time, she woke up disoriented, who knows what she's been told, she's probably confused and upset." It was all "Faith's a psycho killer."

Faith ran into a girl who told her the Mayor---the only person who ever showed love for Faith--killed by Buffy. Of course Faith is going to be freaked out.

Again, it's not a Bitch Buffy thing but just this huge breakdown in empathy on the part of well...everyone.

Sadly, I don't remember how I felt specifically about Faith at the time -- when I watch Season 3 now I am amazed by the beauty that it is. And yes -- the tragic way that Buffy didn't understand Faith and Faith put her off. (What I do remember - - Season 3 being my first complete season - -is how much my friends who brought me into the Buffy thing complained about how it wasn't as good as Season 2.)

I don't think that Buffy, Giles or Angel felt that Faith was completely evil at the point at which she'd killed the Deputy Mayor. But events were taken out of their control.
