I've been watching a lot of vids lately--in fandoms that I'm familiar with and also of varying quality. Just studying them. It takes a while to download the vids but it's worth it I think.

That's the best place to start. Get a feel for what works for you and what doesn't..then ask "How? What makes this sequence different from a similar one in another vid that didn't work?". Watch how different vidders handle beats and bridges. When you listen to the potential vid songs try and pick out the underlying beat or musical changes instead of just listening to it as a whole. When you rewatch your potential vidding shows look for things like movement, color, and framing. Storyboarding when you can't actually vid because of technical limitations is great practice. That way, once you have the equipment to start, you'll be ahead of the game. Good luck!!

I've definitly started watching shows for the clips that I find most often in vids and see what they originally looked like compared to how the vidder has changed/edited them. And started listening to songs wondering if they could be used for a vid.

Also, I've been paying attention to what's being said in various livejournals as well as on mailing lists to pick up tips and see what pitfalls to avoid.
