Three years? Oh for heaven's sake... read up on basic techniques, get some cheap basic supplies, grab some trinket or gift boxes at the dollar store or thrift store or yard sales, and dive right in! Not knowing what I'm doing doesn't stop me from trying new crafts. If you screw up the first time or two you try something, so what? If you screw up, and use the experience to get a clue how it really should work, AND enjoy the process of making something - then it's worth your time.
