Yeah. People fall for it, and its variants. It's known semi-officially as the 409 scam (after section 409 of Nigerian law, which was put in place to (at least in theory) stop it). The victims often end up flying to foreign countries (oddly, it is more often the Netherlands than Nigeria), carrying large amounts of cash. Best case? They're bilked out of their entire life savings by a constant nickle and diming for various fees, taxes and bribes required to free the money. Worst case? They're never seen or heard from again. Literally. People have ended up dead from replying to a 409 email.
