need some help with a universal remote

This Christmas Mom got a universal remote to run everything (plus she lost the remote tot he dvd player) but it lost the programming some how and now I can't figure out how to reprogram one. Are they basically all the same?

Does it have a brand name? because you might be able to find the programming codes on the internet if you've lost the manual.

Our universal remote, an RCA version, has the programming manual online--we lost ours, too. I'm betting they're all similar, but you should see if you can find it online first, to save a little/lot of frustration.
