It's pretty much what Darth's wife said.

I mean, if the letters just need a stamp, which you have at your house, why should you drive some place to drop it in a box when the mailman coms to your house anyway?

It's not the carriers that usually snap, it's the sorters and the ones boxed up inside the post office....

And there is always the possibility of getting your mail ripped off by a passing wanker, so use the flag at your own risk.

The post office says to place outgoing mail in your mailbox but not use the flag these days. The carrier sees it and takes it, but there's no external signal for rip-off artists, "Here's mail!"

I suppose a dedicated thief could check all mail boxes in a neighborhood but it's unlikely.
