There was one Christmas, while I was living back in Michigan, that our cat, whom we'd just acquired from someone else, spent the entire day with her face in a corner and her back to us.

We thought she was pissed about the move. Eight hours later, when the wee mousie made a break for it, we realized what was going on.

Of course, the mouse only made it about halfway across the living room before mamacat caught up with it again. But she wouldn't kill the damned thing, she wanted to play, so she only wounded the poor thing, which proceeded to get away from her, and hide in the sofa-bed.

After several hours of us humans chasing it around the inside of the couch (with just our arms), we finally caught the damned thing, and put it in a jar, eventually to be released back out into the (deeply snow-covered) wild. I don't know what ever happened to the poor thing, but we knew it would fare better outside than in.

After turning on more lights and seeing it scurry by we realized it was a mole (or a vole...a small dark furry creature that scurried). I didn't have any shoes on which I think is part of the problem. Eventually we cornered it near the front door and Mom used the broom to sweep it outside. It moved fast.

I was SUCH A girl. Seriously it was sad. Unlike a few months ago when there was an injured (but still mobile) mouse in Mom's yard. We cornered it and I grabbed it and put in a box and took it the wild animal rescue. I have no idea what happened to it but I couldn't leave it for the cat.
