A Lantern in Her Hand by Bess Streeter Aldrich? I went through all her books I could get my hands on when I was about 12. I wonder how they'd hold up today?

That's the one! I read it when I was about the same age. I'm not sure how they would hold up for someone reading them today for the first time, because I'm extremely sentimental about them.

There was a horrid made for tv movie made several years ago --- Nancy McKeon played Abby and they changed things around and ...it was just bad. While I think Nancy McKeon is a fine actress she's just all wrong physically for Abby.
