I watched the first episode of Starsky & Hutch last night. I'd previously seen the movie and thought it was funny and wasn't sure why fans of the show were upset. Now I know.

Afte one episode I have to say OMIGOD!WTF! were the writers of the movie on CRACK? Seriously the movie has the same names, the same occupations, the same car and that's about it.

The writer did some kind of weird personality transplant. Movie!Starsky is like....a Jewish Benton Fraser. Seriously! Movie!Starsky's mother was a decorated police officer who's dead (I think in the line of duty). He's destroys property chasing down a purse snatcher, he's a bit naive when it comes to drugs (and women, I can't remember). And his clothes are...questionable. Seriously that sweater looks dorky. Movie!Starsky is dorky. The sweater works on Real!Starsky, because he's not dorky.

Movie!Hutch is a bad cop, or at least skirting the edge of bad cop.

The movie works realy hard at the humor. The tv show seems quirky. When S&H go to meet Huggy bear in the X Rated theater there's an old woman in one of the rows watching the movie avidly. You see her pour something out of a thermos and then later eat a tomato or something that she also salts. It's odd but amusing.

Plus the movie has them meeting and partnering up for the first time. In reality it's firmly established that they've been together a long time. Professionaly and personally. Okay, the tv show doesn't establish that directly, but it's there. It's not the UST we've just met of Smallville, but more the vibe that I get from House and Wilson. Actually there's a point where they (S&H) are talking about women and it felt like Wilson' being amused by House's date with Cameron.

The movie was a parody/love letter to the series. As a fan of the original, I still laughed my ass off, but it's definitely not in continuity. It wasn't meant to be.

I adored S&H the tv series. I saw the previews for the movie and shuddered. The later seasons get as close to making text out of sub-text as you could get in a world still getting used to inter-racial hetero couples on TV. I lived for the eps where Starsky or Hutch would get hurt, because you knew the other one was about to go off the deep end. Very satisfying to a unknowing baby!slasher (ie, writer of slash, not slasher of babies, I should probably not use that term again).

I was thinking "seminal" slasher, but that probably has its own unfortunate implications. Does "neophyte" work for you?

Yeah, neophyte is probably the best compromise.

I hated the movie, and I didn't particularly watch the series.
