I need to call and make a dental appointment. I saw another picture of me from my birthday and it was HIDEOUS! So very bad. Not only did I look pasty and fat and totally unflattering I had my HUGE mouth open grin.

A very unattractive smile-- yellowish teeth, receding gums, my mouth looked old.

I hate going to the dentist because it hurts, no matter how gentle they are. And also I live in fear that they are going to say that I need some kind of major dental work (which is really out of the question financially), the last few times I was there the hygenist made noises about wanting my wisdom teeth to be taken out, but I've always refused since it was more optional than anything else. But I'm worried they'll mention serious gum disease or that I need surgery or something.

But, I have been flossing more, my hygenist recommended not flossing every day at first, but to work up to it from every other day and then if my gums aren't irritated start working on flossing twice a day. I also bought some hydrogen peroxide based mouth wash, the dentist gave me some before, but it was really expensive and I found some at the healt food store that was still expensive but not as bad as the doctor's office. And I need a new toothbrush for work since the one I have is hard bristles.

I wish I could use some whitening stuff on my teeth but my dentist told me to stay away from any of that becuase it's too harsh for my gums.

I'm also, for real, giving up diet cokes. I'm not giving up on caffiene all together but no more sodas. Water, tea (but not a lot) and I have some Crystal light. Honestly I enjoy a Diet coke more when I haven't had one in awhile rather than having it all at once.

No more cookies from work. I stocked up on fresh fruit and trail mix when I went shopping today. I'm going to cut some up and take it to work tomorrow. Throw the money I would have spent on sodas into my New TV Fund.

Ugh, I totally know where you're coming from. The coke thing is a biggie, but man, that's tough. Got to get back on that wagon.

The Crest Vivid White toothpaste (there's a separate day and night version) really, really works, and might not be too harsh for you like the actual treatments are.

The other thing I need to get in the habit of is actually brushing at work. Especially since that is where I do most of my eating.

I know how annoying it is not to be able to use tooth-whitening products, but it's better to have yellow teeth than destroyed gums. One cheap & easy thing to do--drink plenty of water! Not only is a moist mouth better for your health than a dry mouth, but water is good for washing away bacteria and the stains left behind by anything else you've been drinking. Sugar-free gum is also good for keeping your teeth & gums healthy since it encourages saliva production and helps push food particles out from between your teeth. Biotene gum is specially formulated with enzymes or something to help protect your teeth.

I wish you luck with your dental stuff. Since I now am expected to go to a dentist 4 times a year for as long as I still have teeth, I can sympathize with anyone else's mouth problems!

Going to the dentist semi-regularily will probably keep you from having major problems.

And I now understand the diet Coke reference in your e-mail!
