Read a really sad thing in the paper. 12 yr old boy was killed by an alligator. Not here but in the state, they haven't found his body.

What makes it really tragic is that his death was totally and completly his fault. Which sounds harsh when talking about a 12 yr old, but there had been alligator sightings near a marina which doubled as a swimming hole. God only knows why anyone would swim where people regularly cleaned thier fish and threw the parts into the water but he and his friends did.

He went swimming even though he and his friends knew there was an alligator. According to the article his friends tried to talk him out of it and even pulled him out of the water once but then he jumped back in and swam further away. Which is when he was attacked.

The local trappers have killed several alligators but it hasn't been determined if they killed the one who killed this boy.

This is Florida. This kid should have known that you don't go swimming when alligators have been seen close by. This kid should also know you don't go swimming in water that's been chummed. That's just asking for trouble.

It's such a waste.

What makes me so angry about the situation is that the Sheriff's Office plans to kill as many alligators as they possibly can. Those animals are being punished for the stupidity of that boy.

I know!

Plus the locals made the area the kind of place an alligator would like by cleaning their fish there and throwing the remains into the water.

I can't believe adults allowed that area to be used as a swimming hole! It's beyond irresponsible. I just don't get why people can't be smarter when it comes to predators.

But they have guns! That means you don't HAVE to have sense. Though, really, they work best in combination.

This is my cold-blooded side coming out, but thing is? I call this Darwinism at work. That level of stupidity - damn. Not enough bleach to clean out that end of the gene pool.

My sympathy right now is with the alligators all these morons are shooting. Why blame the gators? Blame the dumb kid and his apparently oblivious parents. They're the screwups, not the animals. The animals were just doing what they do.

Yes, I'm cranky about it. But I honestly think his parents have some serious 'splaining to do, as to why their kid thought challenging alligators on the gators' turf was smart. You know?

You know, I'm sure there are some who would say that "oh he's twelve!" but hey! there were 2 of his friends that were smart enough to stay out of the water.

I think the real idiots are the parents who are letting that area being used as a swimming hole.

I was raised smart enough to know you don't swim where people are fishing.

Yup. If you've managed the first twelve years growing up near where alligators hang out and people fish? You don't swim out to play some dumb macho game of "chicken" with your friends, especially when they're screaming "YARGH! GATORS!" at the top of their lungs.
