I'm wary of trying something like kickboxing because I'm so out of shape.

Pardon me while I jump all over this but ...

Let it get you into shape. I wasn't in shape when i started krav. Three years, and I'd not done so much as two flights of stairs in a row. The room spun that first class, and I couldn't make it through -- they plied me with soda just to get me back in.

But if you hold on to the understanding that a) that happens and b) it gets better, it's incredibly possible.

Ask Allyson -- she's been kickboxing over a year now -- neither of us could make it all the way through the first class, her less so than me. But she's still there, and loving it, and fitter than she was a year ago, and feeling better about her physicality.

So I'm probably selling myself short on the kickboxing.

If I check into places that teach kickboxing, what should I be looking for?

Yes, you probably are.

Look for understanding teachers. Authority is great, necessary, but any teacher that won't let the students grab water when they need it is doing them a disservice, IMNSHO. Same with stepping to the side when you can't keep up -- you can motivate someone right out the class by yelling when it's not a matter of willpower keeping them from doing the exercises.

Allyson's instructor is a martial artist and a personal trainer -- which is a great combo. I've not liked any non-martially kickboxing I've seen. Sure, I'm textually biased, but some of the modified form I've seen in those techniques can get you injured. That's much harder for you to eyeball, though.

But I'd veer away from something like tae bo -- impact is good. Hitting and kicking bags is so much better than slamming air.
