I know I'm not only fat but I'm out of shape. I wanted someway to get inshape that wouldn't be ... well...aerobic or strenous. So I got Pilates for Weightloss and Yoga for Weightloss. They got here today and I watched some of them.

First-- I need to get a mat. Second--- the yoga one wants me to buy all this STUFF, boxes and balls and whatever. Third -- my GOD I'm out of shape. Fourth - Pilates was made for skinny people and I'm not sure how I can do several of the exercises becasue my stomach gets in the way. I'm fairly flexible but my stomach keeps getting in the way. I guess I'll just do what I can.

Yoga does not want you to buy all that stuff, the people who made the yoga tape want you to buy all that stuff. I do yoga and don't use anything but a towel if I'm working on a cold floor. The accessories are just goodies.

Any solid block of wood will do what the boxes are for. They're to give you a few more inches if your hands won't reach the floor in some of the poses. I'm not familiar with what the balls are for.

What's great about yoga is that if you're out of shape--as I am after 15 years of not doing it--is that you go as far into the position as you comfortably can and hold it. The next repetition will show you more flexibility. The goal is not to stand on your hands, the goal is to get you flexible. It is a workout, even if you're only bending a little or lifting your legs a few inches. What happens with more practice is that you're bending further and lifting higher. After a full workout, I'm sweaty and breathing hard.

Don't push to the point of pain, push to the point of feeling the pull. And it does work. And, yes, the demonstration people are all stick people from Planet Zorkon. They are not your sort of people.

I've also found that, in a pinch, the 3-tape boxed set of BTVS episodes works well, too. Seriously.

And if the tape calls for a strap-type thing (to help you extend your reach when stretching, etc.), you can use the belt from a bathrobe just fine. That's all I use.

I don't have a three tape BtVS set, but I do have the Sean Connery James Bond box set that might work.

Thanks for the belt trick!

My hands don't come all that close to the floor so I'm going to have to devise something.

I haven't watched the yoga dvd all that much but I did see the shortest beginning workout was 30 mins. I need to watch the introduction that shows correct posture and the forms before I can start on the beginning work out.

Pilates was designed for physical therapy first. I'm a bellyful girl, and after the first couple of weeks, it was pretty easy for me to do. The trick is to drop your ribcage and scoop, which makes sense in my head, but is hard to actually, you know, explain outside of it.

I don't think I was dropping my ribcage and scooping right, I'm going to practice the positions before I start the actual work outs.

You might be moving too much if your belly is getting in the way.ou really need to start out with slight, subtle movements in Pilates. If you do them right, ad you use the right muscles, it should be a strain to just get your head off the floor at first. Make sure your belly is scooped, your spine is fused to the floor, and your thigh muscles are *not* engaged.

I'm definitly going to practice that before I get any further.

I will say that today my back felt better than it has all week.

I've been meaning to try pilates, although I may have similar stomach issues. Is the tape itself any good?

Yoga. I've been doing yoga on and off for ages and don't have item one of yoga-specific stuff. A dictionary works pretty well in place of blocks. I have a carpet, so a towel takes the place of a mat just fine. I've drifted away from yoga, but that's due to me being a lazy ho rather than stuff issues. The only item I've thought about getting is a mat (they do have a sticky factor that can be useful). But my local Whole Foods has them for less than most online yoga stores.

Good luck with the workouts!

I folded up a blanket to use for a mat, but it kept slipping. I saw some yoga/pilates stuff at Marshall's so I think I'll try and get a mat there.

As for the dvds...I haven't really watched the yoga one yet. The Pilates dvd has an introduction to the terms and basic movements, a basic instruction, where she shows you excatly how to do things, and then the beginner work outs of various length. The dvd also has intermediate and advanced work outs. I did watch part of the firt beginner work out and the instruction was all voice over with some other chick doing the work out.
